Eight caribou, two reindeer and a moose!

Greetings from Santa's Friend!

Santa and I had a little chat about the team the other day. I thought you might like to know what he said. A direct quote follows:

-----------0-----------------

Everybody thinks I have eight or nine reindeer and that’s not true, not true at all.

I have eight caribou, two reindeer and a moose.

The confusion between caribou and reindeer is a little embarrassing. It all started when I was moved to the North Pole back in 1890. I met this cute little snow princess - Nordic descent. She liked older men and I certainly qualified. I was 1,547 years old at the time. As you know I like good little boys and girls. And she looked good to me!!!

It was a whirlwind courtship---.

You may not be aware of it but there is no wood at the North Pole. What we use for toys has to be imported. Even then we’re leery of it. You see, at the Pole fire is one of our greatest fears. Face it. If there’s a fire we can’t put it out. There’s no water, only snow and ice. This being the situation we use ice and snow to build our homes. There are plenty of raw materials and they’re not flammable.

Most people live in igloos. Because Sandy and I could anticipate dependant clauses we built a Bigloo.

But to continue, it was off-season and Sandy and I were sitting in front of our Bigloo rocking. It was unseasonably warm for the Pole and I was very relaxed, half dozing. The caribou had just gotten back from their vacation and were up on the bigloo playing.

Now this is something you probably didn’t know. Caribou have a tendon in their ankle that makes a tapping sound when they walk. A herd of them on the movie can make quite a racket.

Sandy had led a sheltered life. I of course had been around and around and around. I knew the ways of the world. I had experienced things - rain for example. Not so Sandy. Thus when she leaned over and said "Santa, What’s that noise?", Being half asleep and not thinking, I said "It sounds like rain dear."

To this day she has thought they are reindeer. And I just haven’t had the heart to correct her.

Of course there are two reindeer. I’m sure you heard of Rudolph. I hired him back in ’39. Not 39 but rather 1939. That was a rough winter and he did an excellent job. You’ve got to hand it to him. He is a master of public relations. It’s kind of a shame. The other little reindeer doesn’t get much credit at all. Although in fairness Rudolph did see that she was at least mentioned in his song. I think you’ll remember the line. It’s: "Olive, the other reindeer used to laugh and call him names."

The moose is our latest addition. A few years ago we were expecting some serious drifting in certain areas. Rudolph of course is not very big. You see Caribou and Reindeer are both Rangifers but reindeer are on the small side. At any rate Rudolph called me up and said "Santa, these drifts are deep. I’ve go to have help." I was certainly sympathetic and told that I had a moose friend who might be able to help. Rudolph insisted that I call him. So I did.

I explained to Christopher what Rudolph was facing. His reply was "I’d like to help but I’m already in over my head." Then he added, "Now I do have a daughter. She might be able to help."

Now that’s rather interesting. When the Moose family was expecting they thought they were going to have a little boy and they were going to name him Christopher after his daddy. Instead they had a little girl. Well obviously Christopher is not a good name for a little girl so they compromised and named her Merry Chris. And that’s the name of my moose: Merry-Chris Moose.

-------------0-------------

With that Santa gave me a wink, said "Merry Christmas" and took off.

I’ll be in touch next month.

Santa's Friend

Glenn
