Being Santa is Not Fun
Christmas is less than six months away. I mentioned it to Santa and added that he probably was looking forward to the fun. "Fun" was an unfortunate choice of words.
He set the record straight for me.

Yes I am looking forward to Christmas but let there be no misunderstanding. Being Santa Claus is not fun. It is satisfying, but it is far from fun. Let me explain.
Christmas is a time for giving and every year tons of tots give me their all: love, soggy kisses, crumbly cookies and a colossal cold. During January, a recuperative period, I swear never again, but before long I am back in harness. Forgotten is the fact that being Santa Claus is physically demanding, mentally exhausting and emotionally draining. Remembered are painful pleasures and many many miserable yet magical moments.
Consider this. Simple arithmetic tells us that in only one department store Santa can anticipate lifting as much as ten tons of children between thanksgiving and Christmas. Its true and it is tiring!
Now consider the fact that a conversation between Santa and a child comes close to being a monologue. Santa has to come up with the questions and then help with the answers. Each child must be handled precisely right. You dare not make a mistake. One wrong word can be terribly destructive. Its an awesome responsibility and mentally exhausting.
Then when you are worn out physically and mentally along comes the child with a need you simply cannot fill. It might be a handicapped child, a terribly troubled child or worst of all the child who has all that money can buy but is being destroyed by the lack of tough love which every child wants, needs and only people who truly care can give. You may be good but you are not God and your inability to help is devastating. It tears you apart. At times you cant hold it back. You cry.
So no, being Santa is not fun. It is rewarding because of all the good you can do and yes there are lots of laughs but you cant classify it as fun.
By the way, did I mention that I cant think of anyone Id rather be or anything Id rather do? Matter of fact, Id better get on with it.

And as usual, away he went. Until next month be of good cheer!
Santas Friend.
