Daddy Doesn’t Know

As you may remember, Santa once said that he was singular in that he was plural. In other words not only is there a Santa, there is more than one. So I asked him if any of his alter egos had interesting reminiscences. This was his reply.

Good Heavens, Yes! For example:

One of my nieces was known as "Itty", short for "Itty Bitty." Itty was precociously intelligent. She showed promise and has proved to be quite talented. She loved Santa and looked forward to visiting him. One year, when her Daddy brought her to the Mall, she was all gussied up in a little navy blue coat and hat. She was so little, her father almost had to stoop to hold her hand. The line was horrendous, but they were stoic. When it was Itty’s turn, our chat was rather bland - compared to previous years. After she left, out of the corner of my eye, I could see her having an intense conversation with her Daddy. She was insistent. Finally he literally threw up his hands and rolled his eyes at me as Itty got back in line. This was surprising. My brother, all be it a good father, was not noted for patience. Finally Itty worked her way through the line, got up on my lap and settled down for what apparently was going to be an extended stay. I asked if she had forgotten to tell me anything. Her reply, through pursed lips was a prim "No." There was a pause while she smoothed her coat. It was a little awkward. After a while I finally said that I was very pleased that she had come back to see me but that there were other children in line and that if she had nothing further to say we really should get on with it. She sighed and said "okay." Then she looked me squarely in the eye and said "Santa, you and I are the only ones that know you are really uncle Bud."

I said "Oooooh, what makes you say that?" (You learn to use a long drawn out "Oooooh" to cover when a child catches you off guard.) She turned her attention to her father briefly, then looked me straight in the eye once more and said "Even Daddy doesn’t know."

To the best of my knowledge Santa’s identity is still "our" secret. Of course Itty’s Daddy does "know" but I feel certain he didn’t learn it from her.

Santa then said that there were numerous other memorable moments that he would be sharing with us in the future. And with that he was off again.

Have a good month! I’ll be in touch.

Santa’s Friend,
