Little Rene

People often joke about Santa having to wear waterproof trousers when dealing with "Itty Bitty" ones. I asked Santa about it. This was his response:

Bedwetting or wetting anywhere is a very real concern of mine.

I have a particularly touching recollection in this regard. One of my clients during the early 1960’s was little Rene. Rene was petite, very intelligent and very vocal. In the course of four Christmas seasons I saw her numerous times and got to know here well.

The first time I saw her, her father had quietly let me know they were having a little problem with bedwetting and indicated that if there were anything I could do it would be appreciated. (I learned later that Rene had been adopted and I have to say her parents were truly outstanding.)

I took my most tactful approach and Rene agreed to try. The next year, when they came in, I asked the father about the bedwetting. He was surprised that I remembered, but Rene was the sort of child you don’t forget and I hadn’t.

"Yes, it was still a problem."

Rene and I had another little chat. She would try even harder.

The following year, it was 9 A.M. on a Saturday morning. The Santa House had just been unlocked and I was getting settled for the morning session. There weren’t many people around when Rene and her parents entered the mall. Rene spotted me from fifty yards away and in her high-pitched little voice announced to me and the world, "I don’t wet the bed anymore!!" I clapped my hands and said, "Wonderful!!!"

Rene made a "Bee" line for me sitting in my chair. When she got there, being an experienced Santa visitor, she turned her back in readiness to be picked up. I did and placed her on my knee. Being carried away by the excitement of the moment I tickled her.

"Whoosh." Rene might not wet the bed anymore but her control had not yet been perfected.

The "accident" was smoothed over and life went on - for a time. It was nearly a year later when the parents got a message to me that Rene was very sick and not going to make it to Christmas. Days later, well before Christmas, we had a special birthday party for Rene in a beauty parlor at the mall. I was in attendance, seated on the floor, helping Rene open her presents.

It won’t be long now. Hope your getting into the "Spirit."
