Memorable Visits
Over the years Santa has come in contact with countless children. I couldnt resist. I had to ask him if there were any childish visitors that stood out in his memory. This was his answer.

Good Lord yes!! There are thousands of them.
For example, there was one little girl during the Vietnam War that I will never forget. It was obvious that she came from a home that didnt have a lot of material things. But it had something else. Her clothes were mended and neat. She smelled of freshly pressed cotton and Ivory Soap.
I went through the normal routine about her behavior during the past year. She was remarkably open. "No she hadnt been perfect." "Yes she would try harder." Now we were at what most children consider the most important part of the encounter. "Is there anything you want for Christmas that I dont know about?"
"Yes. My little brother needs a truck."
"That seems reasonable. Now, how about you?"
" Do you think my sister could have a Barbie doll?"
"Well see. But isnt there something you want."
"Well, Mom said she could really use some new spatulas."
"I see. Do you have any more family members?"
"No. Daddy died."
"Oh, Im sorry. But tell me what do you want for Christmas."
We went through the same pattern. The brother liked toy soldiers. The sister was pretty and enjoyed playing "make-up." If mom had some better shoes her feet wouldnt hurt so much when she was at work.
Our encounter was starting to get a little lengthy, which wasnt fair for the children waiting in line so I said, "Ill do the best I can for your family but isnt there something YOU want for Christmas.
I was at the point where I would see to it that she got anything she wanted, within reason.
She thought for a minute and then said, "My uncle is in the army in Korea. He helps out at an orphanage. He told Mom that those little kids need a lot of things. Do you think you could help?" As she started to enumerate all the things those children needed, I came to the realization that this little girl, at her tender age, had already received one of the greatest gifts in the world. She already knew that the pleasure you get out of doing for others is deeper and more long lasting than any other.
