"To Tags"

Greetings from Santa’s Friend!

With the advent of autumn I start thinking about Christmas. "What can I do this year to make the season truly special?" So I asked Santa. He suggested "To Tags." This is what he had to say:

----------------------------------------0----------------------------------

As you are well aware there are two aspects to the Christmas celebration. To those of us who are Christian the most important aspect is the celebration of the arrival of the greatest gift of love in the world.

But there is something else. Something that is of extreme importance to everyone in the world, regardless of his or her religion. It is something with which I am keenly involved. The job I have chosen for myself is to help children grow into more loving, caring and generous human beings. When I succeed, those children, as adults can be a powerful force in our search for a better, more peaceful world. Look at it this way.

Have you ever experienced the situation where immediately after you open a gift someone says, "Did you read the tag?" "Did you see who gave it to you?"

When that happens the gift, as a gift, is almost destroyed. It shows that payment, if only in the form of a "thank you" is expected. To counteract this one of my alter egos has started using "To Tags." Tags that have no "From."

The practice started one year almost by accident. My alter ego was having a little fun with his youngest. He told her that Santa had an awful lot going that year and probably could use some help. "Did she want to get in on the act?" Her answer was an enthusiastic "yes." So they set out to get something for Mom. He already knew what he wanted and it wasn’t difficult to lead the little girl into selecting it. When they got back to the house Dad suggested that he go inside and get Mom’s attention while the little girl stealthily deposited the gift in his workshop. She could hardly contain her excitement. The little project was working so well he decided to let her wrap the gift as well. Her effort was far from perfect but the gift was covered. Now it was time for the tag.

She used big block letters, "MOM." That was all. On Christmas morning when "MOM" opened the gift she was thrilled. But that thrill was nothing compared to the thrill of the little girl. She knew that she and she alone was responsible for pleasing her mother. But she also knew that she couldn’t let anyone know. Watching her experience that warm feeling that results from pleasing others and keeping it a secret was a priceless gift to that Mr. & Mrs. Claus. In fact the occasion was so memorable it led to them adopting "To Tags" as standard practice.

I have followed Santa’s advice. It works!

Santa told me about another neat idea - but we’ll deal with that next month.

Have a great season!
