Unusual Requests

I recently asked Santa if he ever got unusual requests. This is what he had to say.

Every child is unique. Some are subdued. Some are effusive. Some are confident and some are beaten down. What children ask for is most revealing. In many cases I can tell a lot about their background and family life by how they respond to me and what they ask for. It’s one aspect of my job that can be a joy at one moment and heart wrenching the next. I’ll share a couple of memories.

One little fellow I’ll always remember walked in just full of himself. He was better dressed than the average. His social skills were way beyond his years. He was approximately six years old. I of course was well over 1,600. But, despite the age difference, we actually conversed. It was neat.

We discussed his behavior. He readily admitted that he wasn’t perfect. This admission however was immediately followed by a self-assured statement that he was capable of doing better and he was fully committed to doing so in the ensuing year. Now we were at the crucial point.

"Is there anything you want for Christmas I don’t know about?"

"Santa, I don’t know what I want. You see, I haven’t been watching much television lately."

Obviously this was before the advent of the "Web."

Some responses are every bit as revealing but not nearly so amusing.

Another little boy, this time considerably more subdued, stopped by. A nice looking young couple accompanied him. I assumed they were his mom and dad. Wrong.

When we got to the crucial question he asked for a bed.

It was an unusual request. Never before had I been asked for a bed. I pursued it.

"You don’t have a bed?"

"No sir."

"Well--- where do you sleep?"

"I sleep with my Mom."

"You sleep with your Mom and you want a bed."

"Yes Sir, cause when my uncle comes by, I have to sleep on the couch."

I did not pursue the subject any further.

Santa was a little hot and took off for points North.

Until next month, Peace!!
