White out
The last time I communicated with Santa was shortly after we had been belted with snow. We chatted about some of the problems encountered when traveling under arctic conditions. As could be expected Rudolph was mentioned.
-----------------------------------------0---------------------------------------
Everybody thinks Rudolph was employed in 1939 because of his red nose and his ability to see where he was going during the dark of night. These were important assets but his real strength was navigation. He knew forward from backward and left from right. What most people dont think about is the other dimension that is every bit as important. Its up and down.
No matter how high tech High Tech is, humans still think they know better. Theory has it that John Kennedy, a competent but relatively inexperienced pilot, probably thought that his instruments were malfunctioning and, trusting his own judgment, barreled into the sea at full speed. He was disoriented. Disorientation is a major problem when you are flying in the Arctic or Antarctica. Believe me. I know! When you are subjected to a "white out" snow seems to be coming at you from every direction, North, South, East, West as well as up and down. You cant distinguish snow on the ground from the snow all around.
Necessity being the mother of invention we have developed a simple effective method for coping. On our annual run we always carry a supply of black plastic bags weighted down with stones. When we dont know up from down, we throw one out. Unerringly it will fall to earth. Then, knowing where the Earth is, we can avoid bumping into it.
You have to be careful when dealing with Mother Nature.
